Before I ever started my contracting company, I began building the business behind it. Back in 2009, I started designing the structure early — pricing, operations, financial controls, decision flow — knowing that skill alone wouldn’t be enough to build something that lasted.
By the time I officially opened for business in 2011, that structure was already in place. From there, I spent years refining it under real-world pressure — job after job, market shifts, growth phases, mistakes, and corrections.
At one point, I pursued a state certification so I could bid federal work. As part of that process, an independent analyst reviewed my entire business — financials, systems, documentation, and structure.
This wasn’t encouragement. It was a gatekeeper deciding whether my business qualified.
After reviewing hundreds of contracting businesses over more than a decade, he told me something I didn’t expect: he’d never seen a contractor set up their business on such a strong foundation — especially at my age. I was only 25 then.
That moment confirmed something important.
The structure worked.
But over time, I realized structure alone wasn’t the whole answer.
